Tideway Colonies

★★★★☆ 4.3 Editor rating

Tideway Colonies asks you to settle a chain of flooded islands, and the rising water is as much an enemy as any rival faction. You balance fishing, farming, and flood defenses on a hex grid, and every turn forces a small trade-off. It's deliberate and quiet, the sort of game you sink into rather than blast through.

There's no real-time pressure, which suits phone play. You can leave it mid-turn, lock the screen, and pick up the exact same situation later. The AI opponents aren't geniuses, but the terrain and the tide create enough challenge on the higher difficulties that we lost a few maps before things clicked.

It's not the flashiest game in the catalog, and the tutorial could explain its economy better. But once you understand how the tide cycle works, there's a genuinely clever game underneath. We kept opening it just to try one more settlement layout.
