Simulators that fit between stops

Simulators that fit between stops

June 9, 2026 · Marek Novak

Simulation games have a reputation for swallowing whole evenings, but some are built for the opposite: tiny sessions squeezed into a commute. The trick is a loop that pauses cleanly and gives you a satisfying little result each time you open it.

Workshop Tycoon is my current favorite for this. I can knock out one repair order, upgrade a tool, and close the app in under two minutes, and the game is exactly where I left it when I come back. That reliability matters more than any flashy feature.

The danger with these games is the grind. There's always a point where the numbers get big and the fun gets thin. The good ones hide that by handing you a steady drip of new things to unlock, so you always have a reason to open the app at the next bus stop.

My tip: enjoy the early-to-mid game where everything is new, and don't feel obliged to chase the endgame. Simulators are at their best when the shop still feels a little chaotic.
